On December 4, 2024, the DHC/STC Green Team hosted an inspiring event featuring Leslie Caplin, Environmental Outreach Assistant at Pinellas County Solid Waste. This engaging session brought together our community to learn how small changes in recycling habits can make a significant difference for the environment.

Leslie, a passionate advocate for sustainability, shared valuable insights on responsible recycling, helping attendees better understand the journey of garbage and recycling in Pinellas County. Key highlights included:

  • Understanding the Lifecycle of Waste: From curbside pickup to the landfill, Leslie explained the intricate process of waste management in Pinellas County.
  • Using the Pinellas County Recycle Guide: Attendees received complimentary guides to identify proper recycling practices and avoid contamination.
  • Knowing Your Garbage/Recycling Provider: Leslie emphasized the importance of identifying your service provider to ensure compliance with local recycling standards.
  • Avoiding "Wish Cycling": Attendees learned to distinguish recyclable materials from non-recyclables, preventing common mistakes that hinder the recycling process.
  • Extending the Landfill's Life: The discussion underscored how proper recycling habits contribute to preserving Pinellas County’s landfill for future generations.

The event included a complimentary luncheon sponsored by the Palms of Largo, fostering community connections before the presentation. Participants had the option to join in person at the Flamingo Room or virtually via Zoom, making the event accessible to all.

For those unable to attend, a recording of the presentation was made available, ensuring everyone had the opportunity to benefit from Leslie’s expertise.

The DHC/STC Green Team continues to promote environmental awareness through initiatives like this. Whether you’re a seasoned recycler or new to the process, our community welcomes all who are eager to make a positive impact on the environment.
